Vermont Films Feature Newport Natives

NEWPORT, VT – Two North Country Union High School graduates who are making names for themselves in the film world are hosting a double feature at the Waterfront Cinemas in Newport on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. The award winning films being shown are “Soul Keeper” and “Tin Can.”
The two producers and actors are Tim Kavanagh (1984), the son of James and Judy Kavanagh of Newport, and Steve Maas (1996), the son of Dr. James and Billie Maas of Derby. They will be joined at the showing by prominent Vermont author Joseph Citro of Burlington and other members of the cast and crew….

TIN CAN Comes to Newport

SAMSON Productions in association with Intrinsic Films and Projection Films are proud to announce a Vermont Films Double Feature, playing for one night only at the Waterfront Cinemas in Newport, Vermont on February 11th, 2012 at 7:00 PM.

The event will feature the short film SOUL KEEPER (25 min; directed by Tim Joy) followed by the feature length indie sci-fi film TIN CAN (85 min; directed by Logan Howe), as well as a Q&A with the filmmakers. Both SOUL KEEPER and TIN CAN were selections for the 2011 Vermont International Film Festival, and TIN CAN additionally won the award for “Most Artistic Film” at the 2011 Buffalo-Niagara Film Festival.

Both films were produced by and feature as actors Tim Kavanagh and Stephen J. Maas, natives of Newport and alumni of NCUHS.

The cost for the double feature event is $7 for adults, $5 for children and seniors (although the unrated films are not suitable for children).

Jared Mobarak Reviews Tin Can

Jared Mobarak has posted a review of TIN CAN on his website. Some choice bits:

…the practicality of this ship’s centrifugal force physics are glossed over in lieu of watching its claustrophobia-inducing nature slowly consume its inhabitants. Rather than excite by expensive special effects, this high concept setting is used to enhance the human suspense thriller underneath….

…special mention should be made for Argento and Clifford. Embodying the best-written roles with aplomb, their evolution is entertaining and authentic as it culminates into a hellish downward spiral. Leaving both without an authority figure for the second half of the film is a stroke of genius…

TIN CAN in the Williston Observer

We had a nice write-up in the Williston Observer the other day. A few things to correct: Steve and Logan built the set together, and Jayson Argento is not pictured in that photo — that’s Mike Foster. We also didn’t digitally zoom through the vents, we physically stuck the cameras through them, but details details…overall a positive article and we thank Luke for the coverage and for attending our screening!

To the VTIFF, and especially everyone who came out to see our film last night at Palace 9: thank you from the bottoms of our hearts!

The screening was an incredible experience for us. The presentation was incredible — the best projection and sound quality of our film we have ever witnessed. And if that weren’t enough, the room was packed to the brim with so many supportive fans and interested moviegoers! We couldn’t have wished for a more successful evening for our little film. We can only hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as we did. The response was overwhelmingly positive and we are just humbled by the entire event.
