Designing “Cercopes”

Here is a look back (way back!) at one of the first exchanges Logan and I had when it came time to design our set in detail.  I had recently discovered Google Sketchup and had started playing around with some ideas.  Comments [in brackets] are notations I’m adding in the present day.

check it out, i made a 3-d model of the garage using google sketchup.  this (attached) is a 2-d export of the model.  if you download the program (it’s free, just go to google) i can send you the 3d model and we can make set components and move them around inside it and stuff….

[Note that the ship was still called "Cercope" at this time; making the name plural was a change that Logan suggested later on, in order to better reflect the dual pod design]

[One of the interesting parts about working with Logan is her unreserved style of expressing her opinions. *Ahem*  :P ]

[These images show my original concept for the set design, which broke the ship apart into "stations" which we could shoot and move around separately.  As we discuss in our interview on WDEV, this concept was eventually replaced by Logan's more immersive design.]

I found it and downloaded!  I’m so excited!

[Needless to say, my modest attempts got her interested in laying out her own ideas.  In no time she was a Sketchup Master, much better at it than I was]

ok I might have to drive up there like TOMORROW and show you what I’ve got!  I totally think my plan will work and is a completely viable option. gah!  where are you??  think elongated octagon, combined ‘flight’ and ‘lower’ deck, a kitchen, tether station, head, hatch, communications station and 5 external camera locations and 2 bunk camera spots.  Cramped and fully functional!  I’m psyched to show you!

[The plan she describes here is, in fact, what we ended up using as a blueprint.  Once we dig it up, we'll post the final Sketchup model for download, along with a rendered image.]
